**  SUPASLIM  USB **

*** PRINCIPAL FEATURES ***

* Universal filter wheel for 1.25", 48mm  and 50mm/2" unmounted filters through the use of  interchangeable internal disks

* Instant access to filters/disks without interfering with the telescope, focuser or CCD camera

* Intelligent onboard electronics for standalone operation using optional Field Hand Unit if required

* Control from MaxIm, AstroArt, CCDSoft, etc, plus stand alone program, via RS232C interface

* 5-way disks available  for  48mm/2" screw-in  filters and 50mm/2" unmounted filters

* 8-way  disk available  for  1.25" screw-in filters

* Precision accuracy by the use of  infra-red beams and 'V' indent /spring plunger system

* All popular filter makes supported eg Astrodon/Schuler, Astronomik, True Tech, Lumicon, etc - the internal clearance between the rotating disk and sidewall of  the housing is just over 8mm.  This is insufficient for some Baader 1.25" filters, but we can supply our own compatible filter rings and tool to change the glass over to our own (lower profile) filter rings. See below for more details.

* Automove to  filter No 1 position on  reset command from PC (eg after disk change)

* Ultra slim design of  only 21.5mm thick  permits installation in limited back-focus systems

 * 2" SCT  or M54x0.75 threads (mix 'n match)  on  faceplates for maximum clear aperture, plus wide range of  adapters

* Wide range of  adapters for connection to virtually any telescope or CCD camera or digital SLR

* 12v dc  operation (12v psu supplied as standard)

* Optional field hand unit.

* Compact design (6" diameter only ) and lightweight (0.6Kg - 1.3lb) unloaded

 The SupaSlim USB (SSU), does not replace the original SupaSlim RS232 (now designated SSR), which will continue in production.  The principal differences are summarised below. Most operational features are common, including the full range of  adapters.

* For  FW-502 Disk assembly for 50mm and 2" unmounted glass filters click here

Differences between SupaSlim USB and SupaSlim RS232C

1. The SSU has only three disk options, for FW-5, FW-502 and FW-8.  The SSR has additional options of  FW6, FW-6d and FW-7, while stocks last

2. The SSU is suited for direct connection to the USB port of  a PC or  hub, but within 5 metres cable length unless USB extenders are used. The SSR, operating on RS232 can operate at several tens of   metres distance, using a RJ 4-way cable, so is very convenient where users operate from an control room some distance from the observatory

3. The Field Hand Units, now designated FHU-U and FHU-R are physically identical in appearance, but the former operates off 12 volts dc and is connected to the SSU with a RJ4/4 connector (see below), whereas the FHU-R operates off 5 volts dc and is connected to the SS(R) via a RJ6/4 connector

4. The internal disks are of slightly greater diameter than previously, but ALL new production SSU and SSR will handle these disks.  SS(R) from serial number 500 onwards will handle all disks. SS(R) with serial numbers lower than 500 will handle all disks except FW-502, and may not take current 5 and 8-way disks depending on tolerancing.

The image above left shows the RJ4/4 socket which is used for connection to the Field Hand Unit FHU-U (serial RS232).  This is not the same as on the SupaSlim RS232, which has a RJ6/6 socket and which outputs 5volts instead of  12 volts, to power the FHU-R.  The power inlet and power requirements are the same for both SSU and SS-R

At right is the USB converter, which plugs into a 3.5mm jack socket on the side of  the electronics box (see below)

The 3.5mm socket is on the inner edge of  the electronics box, and the picture at the top of  the page shows the USB converter cable plugged into the SSU.

INSTALLATION OF  USB DRIVER

    The USB drivers are included on the CD which comes with the SupaSlim Filter Wheel, as is the Stand-alone control software,  and user guide.

For Windows 7 and Vista download the win7_vista.zip file, extract to a directory of  your choice, open the directory and follow the instructions for driver installation

For Windows XP and earlier versions of  Windows download the file setup_XP_USB.zip, extract to a directory of  your choice, open the directory and double click on the usb2ttlinstaller.exe file.

SOFTWARE

Note that SupaSlim filter wheels can be controlled from programs such as MaxIm CCDSoft and AstroArt, all of which offer camera and autoguide software, and sequenced imaging.

For stand-alone operation you can use the True Technology software which has a screen shot per the image below:

Note that you can type in  filter names  in the boxes on the right-hand side, selectable from  a drop-down list.

You will note that this software currently requires manual assignment of  a port in the range COM3 to COM8 for USB control, or COM1/COM2 for RS232 serial control.  Note that once you have set to the correct COM port and have allocated filter names, the configuration will be automatically saved when you click on the save button to exit. If you close the application by clicking on the cross at top right of  the Window, the configuration will not be saved. This sofware (zip file) can be downloaded here
